Nyle has been doing a great job keeping up the blog, but today I'm taking over the keyboard. I have so much to say.
What a contrast between Beijing and Nanning! We're very close to Vietnam and the countryside reminds me of the jungles that I've seen on American war movies. It's unbearably hot and humid. I hope we'll adjust. While Beijing was heavily influenced by Western ideas, Nanning is remote and more of what I imagined China would be like.
We are very much a spectacle to the Chinese. For the first time in my life, I really understand what it is to be a minority. The girls are continuously surrounded as everyone wants to take their pictures and touch their blonde hair. We try to always smile and be polite, but at times it can be tiring. Many people approach us and count our children...one,two, three and then give us the thumbs up. They refer to Patrick as our "handsome boy." Yesterday, he told me that he plans to come back to China when he's older. Ha!
I'm anxious to sample the food here in Nanning-it's mostly Cantonese. The food in Beijing was wonderful! Everyone here eats so healthy. We actually feel better now that our diets have changed to mostly fresh fruit, rice, chicken, and steemed veggies. Although, yesterday in the Beijing airport we found a KFC. It tasted great!
We had trouble obtaining purified water in Beijing. We were advised not to drink bottled water from anywhere other than the hotel. Of course, it was sold for $7.00 a bottle. (The kids were thrilled to drink as much Coke as they wanted.) Here in Nanning, our hotel provides us with unlimited purified water. We're rehydrating!
Our hotel is nice and very clean. The staff is extremely helpful. Best of all, our room has a tiny metal crib waiting for Fiona. I can't believe that we'll meet her tomorrow. It seems like we've been waiting forever to hold her. How blessed we'll be to finally have her!
Today we plan to visit some local markets. We'll take lots of photos and post them later. Keep the comments coming. We look forward to reading them every day. We miss everyone so much!
